Because this blog is about photography, and at least somewhat about making images, it’s a good idea for me to explain a little bit about how I take pictures as well as how I display them here on kilowords.
Generally, each image I’ve taken is displayed along with a bit of info about the exposure, camera, and lens; if analog film was used, the film and developing data is included as well. Like this, for example:
Kodak E100VS; Leica M4, Summitar 50/2 "hex iris"
pro lab development
You’ll find all my posted photos filed under the Gallery category, where each entry is dedicated to an individual image and some information about its circumstances and background. You’ll usually find a chatty little monologue from me at this point. The school of thought on this practice, though, is decidedly split.
Many popular photo forums have long-running threads dedicated to the posting of photos with little or no comment. Photo.net, for example, has its No Words forum, a place that’s kind of like dueling banjos with pictures. On the other hand, Rangefinderforum calls its photo thread Words/No Words, a name that signals a more permissive environment and subtly echoing the alternative opinons of having to “explain” one’s photo. The list goes on, I’m sure, but in all cases, the choice to post photos either with explanation or no comments at all is at the discretion of the photographer. Much to the dismay of those with differing opinions, of course.
As a means to disclaim, I will add that all this background and explanation is in my nature as a technical person, so it’s very possible that I can’t even help it; I encourage you to take it or leave it as it suits you. I can only hope that it pleases some.
Finally, it’s more than sufficient for me to say that I’m not a professional photographer; most of the folks I know who make their living by taking pictures are far too busy to afford themselves the luxury of keeping a photo blog. The very fact that this place exists is proof enough that I’m not very busy.
